Clears some ambiguity. If you have another suggestion please post that!

Edit: changed antecedent tag from references photo to photo-referenced after some discussion.

EDIT: The tag alias photo_reference -> photo-referenced (forum #140921) has been approved by @Hillside_Moose.

I'm not sure what ambiguity it clears up because the second word looks like an incomplete sentence to me.

"photo reference" can sound like it's a tag to be used on a photo that is referenced by a picture, rather than a picture that uses a photo as a reference. "references photo" doesn't have this problem.

what would happen to the earlier reference_photo tag?

"references photo" is also ambiguous, besides "[this post] references [a] photo," it could also be read as "[this post is a] references photo" (as in, a photo of references)

It could be done in the form of a senetence predicate instead, such that

photo_reference -> references_a_photo
reference_photo -> a_reference_photo

I think even in this thread people have been confused about what exactly a reference_photo is, lending to the fact it doesn't have an intuitive name.

Can't we just settle on the term that is most used?

Just to toss out a proposal, but perhaps "photo_derivative" to bring it more inline with derivative_work.

references_photo sounds significantly worse and, yeah, like an incomplete sentence.

According to wikipedia, art produced through photo-referencing is said to be photo-referenced.
Sooooo, photo-reference(d) is actually the more widely known term already.

photo-referenced sounds pretty good to me. The correct use of hyphenation makes it obvious that an image with this tag is not a reference for something else but is, indeed, photo-referenced itself.
