Reviewing the Genderswap tag

Posted under Tags

I believe we have decided to stop using the base character tag such as bowser on images which only bowsette appears, and this should not significantly hinder users searching for genderswapped Bowser because the wikis for both Bowser and Bowsette link to each other. This solution can be extended to all list_of_genderswap_characters

Currently, genderswap and either genderswap_(mtf)) or genderswap_(ftm) are tagged on every instance where a character is not the gender they were initially. This includes list_of_genderswap_characters

Due to the recent Bowsette phenomenon, those tags are getting more use, but some users believe this is diluting the tags usefulness in searching for genderswaps which are occuring in the image, and/or genderswapped characters which do not result in their own character tag.

We can stop using the genderswap tags on all list_of_genderswap_characters and put a note on their wikis to only use them for genderswaps which are occuring in the image, and/or genderswapped characters which do not result in their own character tag.

IMHO, the genderswap tags should be kept as is. The change you propose would remove the capability of being able to search all genderswap characters with a single tag. Additionally, users would lose exposure to any and all genderswap characters that they don't know the exact name to. Also, such a scheme would be a nightmare to maintain, as how would it be decided when and when not a genderwswap character name is legitimate?

So loss of flexibility, loss of exposure, and difficult to maintain. For what..? The ability to find characters that don't have a genderswap character name? That seems to be a limited use case, and instead such work should be left to the individual user if they are so interested in such information.

Finally, for actively occurring genderswap scenarios, we already the transformation tag which can be added.

Most of the characters featured in the list_of_genderswap_characters have less than a hundred posts, and only a few break 1000 (there's a bunch I'm not sure even deserve their own genderswapped character tag tbh).

I'd say that genderswap should only be applied if it's abnormal to see that character genderswapped (unless the transformation is depicted in the post). Ranma-chan and the female Admiral, for instance, are common portrayals of a character as the opposite gender. Meanwhile, it's rare to see a genderswapped Red - there's no popularised design, official or otherwise.

We've actually had ... a few discussions about this.
My general argument was against using it on characters who (almost) never appeared on screen as their original genre and basically don't have an "original" design, because the genderswapped design is actually the original design. In which case there really is no use to tagging every image of them as GSWP ... also it would be 100% of images.

On the other hand, Bowsette falls 100% on the side of, "she's a genderswap/transformation of a known character that is the opposite genre and every image with her should be tagged with, genderswapp and the name of the original character". According to the wiki, just like a Naruko, or Kyonko.

If we want to change the definition of genderswapp so that it only refers to the depiction of the genderswap act, That sounds ok to me. Only post #3259475 and a few others would be tagged then.
We would lose gems like post #3265829 but they currently have a pool for that.
That is, as long as we leave a note on each wiki for the genderswappd character that they are so.

People searching for genderswap aren't looking specifically for the moment a character changes gender, they're just looking for characters that are traditionally one gender being portrayed as another. I'm pretty sure that the scenario you mentioned is fine being tagged with genderswap and transformation.

The reason I'm against that is that tagging Bowsette with genderswap basically floods any searches of genderswap with Bowsette, thus rendering it borderline useless. It's much the same reason why the Kancolle girls don't get tagged with personification, even though they totally are, because that'll make the personfication tag practically synonymous with Kancolle.

Also worth noting is that there are actual genderswaps of bowser from before this whole thing happened (See: #post 454462 #post 1552098 for examples), and tagging bowsette with genderswap will ensure that those images will be practically buried.

I'm not sure about the Bowsette situation. I lean towards not applying the genderswap tag to her because she is so unlike the original Bowser and more like a corruption of Peach. Same with Princess King Boo. They're just female personifications of the characters they're based on, which raises another question. Do we apply the personification tag to Bowsette and friends?

If anything it'd be humanization.

What is the primary search we want to facilitate?

1 find all images of characters resulting from a genderswap (including Bowsette)
- tag all images as genderswap if the character is not their original gender

2 find images where the character is not their usual gender (according to their chartag)
- do not tag images as genderswap if the genderswapped character has a genderswapped name

With option 1 as default, to find option 2 you must search genderswap and negate each popular genderswapped character from your search.

With option 2 as default, to find option 1 you must search genderswap to find some results, and also go to list_of_genderswap_characters and search each entry to find the other results.

I prefer option 2, but is there a way to use the tagging system to facilitate both of these searches?

Why would someone specifically want a search of all genderswapped characters that happen to not have a danbooru character tag?

Wanting to find all genderswapped pictures full stop is far more likely, as is wanting to find all genderswapped images from a given franchise. In both cases option 1 is vastly superior.

For instance, someone wanting to search for genderswapped Haruhi stuff:
Option 1 - just type in suzumiya_haruhi_no_yuuutsu genderswap. Easy and intuitive
Option 2 - Find the existance of the list of genderswapped characters, scan down the list for Haruhi characters (there are 9 on there) then do a copyright search plus ~ before all those characters AND the genderswap tag. Long, slow, laborious, requires knowledge of the existance of a relatively obscure wiki article and uses up 11 search tags which most don't have.

^This. Also, remember the Bowsette trend *will* die down in the future.
