toned vs muscle tags distinction

Posted under Tags

The line between muscle and toned is left to the judgement of the post tagger. However, these tags should be mutually exclusive when used to describe a single character.

This line was written around 4 years ago, and I feel like it's time we try to not depend on the user reading every tag wiki. We should try to find better tag names that expresses what we want the tags to be used for, without having to rely on the wiki (as much as possible, at least).

The distinction between just being toned and being buff should be there, but the tag names, especially muscle is not clear enough. Especially since we currently have 1200+ uploads with both toned and muscle when the wiki states that they should be mutually exclusive.

I'm honestly not sure myself how we should go about this, but using a word like "Buff", "Bulky", or just simply "Muscular" might be better to drive home what the tag should be used for.
But I figured we should discuss this properly before doing anything.

Not sure how I interpret it but here's the deal (fetched from "here":[en.wiktionary.org])

  • Buff (bodybuilding): Muscular. (also buffed or buffed out)
  • Bulky (bodybuilding): Having excess body mass, especially muscle.
  • Tone: The definition and firmness of a muscle or organ.

Yeah, I admit I went too far in this case. I'd like to go with "buffed" for now.

I agree with both users above me.
I guess it´s easy for someone who cares about toned or muscular people to tell them apart, but if you don´t think about it, I guess it´s easier just to use "muscular" even if it should be toned.

And muscular sounds better. We say "that person is muscular" and not "that person has alot of muscles".

Yes I was wondering the same thing when I saw muscular was aliased and not the original tag in the first place. I guess that should help along with adding examples to the wikis.

Shouldn't we find a way to make it more obvious that these two tags should be separate things then? Or should someone just keep gardening it?

BUR #4210 has been approved by @evazion.

create alias muscle -> muscular

Reversing the alias to better reflect what the tag should be used for.
It's probably still not a fix to the mistagging that happens with toned, but it should help.

I have added examples for both wikis and tried to make it more obvious that they should be mutually exclusive.
Also added a part explaining when to use muscular with plump for wrestler/bodybuilder type of physique as well (since both tags should go together here, in contrast to toned).

I know this is an old thread, but I still see lots of "muscular" tags that don't really seem appropriate, so here's my two cents on how to distinguish them. If the person in question wore clothes that covered their whole body and were snug but not skin-tight, would you be able to deduce their physique from their body shape? If so, they're muscular; otherwise, they're toned. I think this would make a decent, fairly objective way to make a distinction between the tags. Does that seem reasonable to everyone else?

I think starting a new thread would get you more engagement. You can link back to this one for reference if needed.
I do welcome more discussion regarding this topic, though. What we have right now definitely isn't ideal.
