"bento" is the far more common way of referring to Japanese boxed meals. It also has 100 million Google search results, which is over a hundred times more than "obentou".

For reference obento to bento, adding an 'o' at the start, is a matter of formality.

bentō to bentou, is a matter of whether we use waapuro romanization or the macron which is used in the real world where they aren't constrained by ascii characters.

I agree because that is the widespread way to refer to the real world japanese object, which are already literally foreign for people.

However I do foresee in the future discussions about the ou in character tags

This is like the Tokyo/Toukyou situation. Nobody but pretentious weeaboos calls it "obentou".

It's worth noting that Wikipedia uses the term "bento" for this: Wikipedia: Bento.

Once it becomes a common enough loanword in English (listed in dictionaries too, in this case) we can drop the long vowels if it's commonly spelled without them.

What about the wrapped obentou tag?

I'm suddenly reminded that not even that ancient bento box copypasta calls it an obentou.
