pins is an ambiguous tag with no wiki page. At a glance, most current uses seem to fall under what would more clearly be described with the existing tag button_badge. Any reason not to make this one an alias?

I feel like pin_(accessory) (to not confuse with rolling_pin) could be used as umbrella tag for all of these elements.

Going through pin now and replacing it with badge, button_badge, brooch, or lapel_pin as necessary.
And what tag do you intend to use for actual pins like in post #3292005? Their appearance and function are distinct from needles and tacks.

insect pin seems to be the official term for those. I added it to a couple posts already.
e: Also added sewing pin for the things you put in a pincushion.

We also have insect_collection for that butterfly post, btw. Not sure if it applies.
BUR #7276 has been rejected.
Okay, cleaned out the pins tag, except for a couple posts that I can't access. Figure it should be kosher to alias pins to pin, unless anyone has any objections.
Now: which of the following, if any, do we want to implicate pin as an umbrella tag?
e: pin is also cleaned out for now, except for a couple that really do seem to just be generic pins.

Doesn't make much sense to me to alias together two tags meant to be empty. You should propose a BUR with implications if you want to turn it into an umbrella tag, possibly in a new thread with a meaningful title like "turning pin into an umbrella tag", otherwise this discussion has a risk of dying out.
Is there really any reason for us to distinguish between lapel pin and badge?

Both pin and pins were already being used as catchall tags. I'd be fine with nuking both of them (I don't think most people are going to need a search that covers both the pins you wear and the pins you stick into things), but I feel like the tags will just start proliferating again. I'm still not completely familiar with how the tagging system works - can we turn them into disambiguation pages?
Turning them into disambiguation just means emptying them and writing in their wikis the right tags to use, so that someone who looks at pin or pins because they don't know the right tag will quickly find it.
If a tag is empty then someone searching for it will automatically see the wiki (see choking for an example).
Aliasing two empty tags together is useless because system maintenance automatically removes any aliases or implications for tags that don't have at least one post from the last 2 years.
I agree that it makes no sense for us to have an umbrella tag for tumbtacks and badges, but we probably need utility aliases because I imagine a lot of users, especially ESL ones, aren't familiar with all the meanings of "pin".
