Sweater vest implication

Posted under Tags

Wikipedia states a characteristic of a vest/waistcoat is that it has a front opening. A lot of sweater vests don't feature that. If those are also to be included under vest, then would not sleeveless shirts also be considered vests as well if worn over something else?

Wikipedia also notes that sweater vests are also called sleeveless sweaters and sleeveless pullovers, implying the term vest is the least important part of their naming.

Damn, foiled again by not reading, sorry.

As for the BUR, I downvoted because having a front opening is the hallmark of a vest, and sweater vests are much closer to sweaters without sleeves in appearance.

Not all vests have a front opening. Stabproof vests, for example, have an extremely good reason for not opening in the front. The hallmark of a vest is its shape, not whether it opens.

Then what is the functional difference between sleeveless jacket, sweater vest, and collared vest? post #6272532 for example, it has the same shape as your average sweater vest minus the v-neck, yet is not actually a vest.

I guess the other hallmark of a vest is that it's generally made to be worn over another layer. Reimu's garment in that post is a sleeveless shirt rather than a vest. Looking at these tags though, it seems this might be more of a can of worms than I realised.
