Hmm I don't know if our usual romanization policies necessarily apply in this case. It seems different from, say, "Tunasima Sirou" just using a painful romanization. It's like he's not necessarily intending it to be a name of Japanese origin (but is kanji-ifiying it anyway? because... that's cool? Or something.)

In principle, the whole judging-based-on-popularity may not be a great way to go about it, but I think realistically, in this case, the popularity of certain artists have caused the way they spelled their names (albeit incorrectly) to become widespread and thus much more easily recognizable. I believe the concern here is that changing it to follow the rule may cause a lot of undue confusion that could just create a new problem in place of the old one. It might turn out to be more trouble than it's worth, at least in the short term.

danbooru policies have traditionally been anti-mainstream. Anyone remember the whose toosaka_rin fiasco? I still think that toosaka_rin should have stayed, though it seems we decided to go with tohsaka_rin in that instance. As usual I'm going to support keeping to a standard rule in as many cases as possible. And that means pushing through this alias ;)

But again, I'm still not quite convinced that this is the same as a difference in romanization scheme (yes, I wanted toosaka to stay too, but oh well, that ship has sailed... a few times, actually, as we went back and forth). Instead it just looks like he made a name up and retroactively kanji-fied it. I guess that's what seems different about it to me, and leaves me inclined to leave the name alone. Or just go with his real name.

jxh2154: The name actually exists in ENAMDICT, though.
帯人 【たいと】 Taito (u)
Well, that doesn't mean much, though, since ENAMDICT also has names like
童莉夢 【どりーむ】 Dori-mu (f)
But it's still something.
