Misskey.io now requires an account to view images.

Posted under General

You cannot view hidden content without an account, and from what I've read online, it's difficult to make an account. Speculation varies from range bans to server limits. Has anybody had any luck making an account?

I managed to register months ago from the EU despite them claiming to not support it. Have they started blocking account creation?

Apparently non-JP registration was blocked in summer 2023, but you could still view posts without an account until like last week.
Also I managed to bypass it by making an account on a different server. Similar to what I had to do for pawoo/mastadon.

From "⚠️Attention Overseas Community Members⚠️" section in Misskey.io announcement page:

1. For our users from the EU and UK, please be aware that Misskey.io cannot accept registrations due to non-compliance with GDPR standards. Additionally, registrations made via VPN or disposable email addresses may lead to account freezes.

Translated from the Misskey.io support page "Restrictions on new user registration from overseas", last updated on Nov 15, 2023:

Misskey.io is operating as a service for Japan, but we have recently experienced a surge in user registrations from outside of Japan, and we are unable to keep up with our moderation efforts.
At the same time, it has become difficult for us to provide sufficient support, so we are restricting new user registrations from outside of Japan for now.

We will announce when we are ready to reopen, so please wait for a while.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

You need to enable full res somewhere in the misskey account settings.

I'm saying for those without a misskey account or that view misskey posts via a different mastodon server.

From what I can see, images on misskey.io viewed from different Misskey servers (not sure about Mastodon and other software) sometimes load as their original format. Other times they're webp.

I think this might depend on whether the artist themselves turned on the Keep original image option (it defaults to off, at least on the Misskey instance I use) when posting the image, or did that in their preferences. If my hunch here is correct, I'm not sure that viewing the image on misskey.io itself will make any difference.

Edit: Example of an image that loads as a PNG for me

That one's PNG on Misskey as well. It has nothing to with the "Keep original image" setting, that's just for the artist's private "Misskey Drive" storage. Images are always the same on every instance. It's just a matter of whether misskey converts it or not.

By the way, WEBPs converted from PNGs on Misskey are always lossless, but they're sometimes downscaled. If you see a WEBP with dimensions under 2048 and a ".png" filename, it has the same pixels as the original PNG.
JPEGs and even WEBPs (though I doubt any artists would export as WEBP locally) are double-lossy and sometimes lossy-downscaled-lossy.

Even after registering with a different Misskey server and selecting original quality, I'm seeing *.jpg.webp most places. I'm not able to compare with what shows natively in a logged-in instance of misskey.io.

It's the same on Misskey.

So is there any way to get a Misskey account outside of Japan at all, or are we just fucked?

I've been trying to get an account, but even with a VPN it doesn't let me in. There's an artist that posts lewds specifically on their Misskey, so I'd be upset if there were no way to see em without specifically being in Japan.

Just use misskey.art. You can follow .io accounts and view their posts.
