Thanks for bearing with me on this topic!

Ok, I kinda get what you want after having read through the thread a few times. The problem here seems to be that the existence of this alias means that non-septum nose rings and septum non-rings are not easily searchable. Unfortunately, if we remove the alias, what will really happen is that we'll have septum piercing and nose ring as two almost identical tags that will overlap in 99% of the cases, so searching for those edge cases will not necessarily be significantly easier.
I think either you misread my BUR or I'm really misunderstanding what you mean here. I'm suggesting we deprecate nose ring entirely (and I'm promising to garden it if the BUR is accepted), is there a reason you want to keep nose ring? To me it seems like padding since most nose piercings are rings, in the same vein we don't have nose stud piercing or something.

Wouldn't it be more practical to have a tag specifically for uncommon nose piercings instead?
The problem with this is that nobody would think of a septum piercing as an uncommon nose piercing. They're probably the most common type of nose piercing, and one of the most well-known placements in general. I think uncommon nose piercings would be good for weird stuff like the lip/chin piercing in post #6297882 or some of the strange piercings traditional in some ethnicities if those crop up on here.

nostril piercing is not very clear either: a septum piercing is technically a nostril piercing and I have very little faith our users are able to understand the tag would be for single nostril piercings unless we call it single nostril piercing.
I agree that users who aren't familiar with body piercings might mistag this, but I don't have a better suggestion than single nostril piercing.
Anatomically speaking, the septum is the thing that divides the two nostrils, and if you told any piercing you wanted a "nostril piercing" they would know you aren't talking about a septum piercing. So it's hard for me to gauge how many mistags there would be; I'm fine with calling it single nostril piercing if that's necessary.
