septum_piercing != nose_ring

If you google "nipple ring" the first result is a nipple bar, that doesn't mean they're the same thing.
I agree that trying to distinguish every instance of an open or closed nose ring would be fruitless.
I'm much more interested in distinguishing between septum piercings and other types of nose piercing.

Let's take a step back and look at tag group:piercings. For piercing tags, we're looking at location, not type of jewelry, as its distinguishing trait. We already have nose piercing, so why do we need nose ring? A septum piercing is one of the most common types of piercing. It deserves to have its own tag. We can't just reverse the alias because stuff like post #7365940 would end up mistagged. Hence my suggestion.

tldr I think we need a septum piercing tag, I don't care about nose ring.

BUR #26554 has been rejected.

remove alias septum_piercing -> nose_ring
deprecate nose_ring
mass update favgroup:32476 -> septum_piercing
mass update favgroup:32477 -> nostril_pirercing

Here is a more precise BUR that illustrates my point better.
nose ring started as a tag for septum piercings but it's being used for stuff like post #7365940.
I don't think we need a tag specifically for ring-shaped nose piercings.
If this is approved I will go through nose ring and retag everything.

Ok, I kinda get what you want after having read through the thread a few times. The problem here seems to be that the existence of this alias means that non-septum nose rings and septum non-rings are not easily searchable. Unfortunately, if we remove the alias, what will really happen is that we'll have septum piercing and nose ring as two almost identical tags that will overlap in 99% of the cases, so searching for those edge cases will not necessarily be significantly easier.

Wouldn't it be more practical to have a tag specifically for uncommon nose piercings instead?

nostril piercing is not very clear either: a septum piercing is technically a nostril piercing and I have very little faith our users are able to understand the tag would be for single nostril piercings unless we call it single nostril piercing.

Thanks for bearing with me on this topic!

I think either you misread my BUR or I'm really misunderstanding what you mean here. I'm suggesting we deprecate nose ring entirely (and I'm promising to garden it if the BUR is accepted), is there a reason you want to keep nose ring? To me it seems like padding since most nose piercings are rings, in the same vein we don't have nose stud piercing or something.

The problem with this is that nobody would think of a septum piercing as an uncommon nose piercing. They're probably the most common type of nose piercing, and one of the most well-known placements in general. I think uncommon nose piercings would be good for weird stuff like the lip/chin piercing in post #6297882 or some of the strange piercings traditional in some ethnicities if those crop up on here.

I agree that users who aren't familiar with body piercings might mistag this, but I don't have a better suggestion than single nostril piercing.
Anatomically speaking, the septum is the thing that divides the two nostrils, and if you told any piercing you wanted a "nostril piercing" they would know you aren't talking about a septum piercing. So it's hard for me to gauge how many mistags there would be; I'm fine with calling it single nostril piercing if that's necessary.
