Unlike the 70s, 80s, or 90s, there is no definitive or at least extremely common 2010s anime style. In fact I dare anyone who thinks otherwise to find a coherent set of examples for it and add it to the wiki.
Unlike the 2000s and before, yeah, I don't think we're far enough away from the 2010s for there to have been a significant stylistic shift between now and then. The other decade style tags are more for a style named after when they were popular, while this is just "vaguely looks like it could be from the 2010s" when the 2010s and 2020s don't look very different to begin with.
Soft agree on nuking it. You could persuade me otherwise, but there are a few things I’d need to see.
1. Common features and characteristics of 2010s anime. 2000s_(style) has a pretty good summary on its wiki page. I’d need to see something similar that’s both somewhat comprehensive (doesn’t have to be fully fleshed out yet) and some solid examples.
2. Basically, some type of reasoning for why it’s the defining style of the decade. Basically, I think this era is much more notable for the sheer proliferation of styles, rather than allowing any single style to dominate. Show me what’s so distinctive and universal that we should avoid more targeted style tags. (Because we have A LOT.)
3. Evidence that the time is ripe and there’s definitely been a shift in style. We’re basically halfway into the 2020s now. Sure, we can distinguish stuff from what was popular in the 2000s, but has enough time passed to accurately distinguish what makes the 2020s different from the 2010s? I’ve noticed some trends in the past few years that distinguish today’s art from, say, 2018’s art. Are these short-term trends or a longer term style shift? I’ve been kind of, sort of, maybe leaning towards a longer term shift, but honestly, I don’t know. So if you think there’s been a shift, please, show me. (Because this one has been bugging me for a while.)
I’m actually not super fond of categorizing things by decades (too much stuff fails to cleanly fit into certain decades), but I’ve loooooong since given up on that battle. So if people feel strongly that the 2010s merit their own tag, I’m open to changing my mind.
I’m also open to changing my mind in, say, a year from now, five years from now, a decade… Basically, if the dominant style changes enough that the 2010s style start standing out very clearly as its own unique thing, I’d like to see the tag. But right now, I’m just not seeing it. I don’t think the time is ripe.
