Are AI-assisted images allowed?

Posted under General

Hi there,
I use AI tools to help create my images, but it's not just simple generation. I spend hours refining them—fixing bad anatomy, improving objects, and polishing everything in Photoshop.

Would I be allowed to post my images on your site under AI-assisted tag?

On Derpibooru, even though they banned AI-generated content, I’m still able to upload my images under the AI-composition tag. They have clear rules for quality (https://derpibooru.org/pages/aiquality), and I meet them.

My images are high quality, and I put real effort into making them look great.

To cut a long story with a lot of "actually" and "unless" short: No, not really.

In practice, AI-assisted not being outright banned is more to not get too caught up into technicalities, but if the base of your image is still just modified generations, and based on the posts on your account, you should seek a different platform.

Weird to tell someone, "No, they're not" when two-thirds of ai-assisted is active.

Yes, ai-assisted images are allowed, but they're most likely subject to more scrutiny from Approvers and thus less likely to be approved than an image that's (presumed to) not have involved AI. Additionally, you tagged two of your uploads ai-generated, which on danbooru is distinct from AI-assisted and is used to mean there was no, or minimal, human involvement. AI-generated images are banned, AI-assisted images are not.

I would still agree with anon tokyo, however, that you may be better suited finding another platform that's more receptive to AI in general, regardless of your images being generated or assisted.

Yes, that's the point, I was replying to this specific case. Me and quite a few other approvers dont mind some limited use that much (think mostly-covered-up backgrounds), but when it's generated art that has been touched up the overwhelming majority will hard pass on that. Even when tagged ai-assisted they will often get flagged and deleted because, to put it simply, they "look like slop", and that definitely applies here. Simple % of active posts has no bearing on that.

I think it's worth pointing out that some of the confusion arises from the fact that many many prompters refer to their creations as "AI-assisted" by which they mean that they took a fully AI-generated image and subjected it to a bit of editing to remove the obvious AI artifacts and fix any fucked up anatomy. This type of "AI-assisted" "art" is not allowed on Danbooru, and for our purposes we generally tag that as fully AI-generated, not as AI-assisted.

We more typically use the AI-assisted tag for posts where actual artists who are capable of creating art from scratch begin to incorporate AI into their workflow (e.g. helping with shading, filling in backgrounds, etc). This is not banned, and is left to the whims of the modqueue and the judgement of approvers.

Obviously, it's often impossible to know for sure which is which. But 95% of the time, prompters like OP who are claiming to be "AI-assisted" are in the former category and are not allowed.
