undeprecate baby_animal

Previous topics forum #322630 forum #270991

This came to my attention while uploading the below

Both cub and baby animal have been deprecated.

We don't have a tag for baby animals that fall outside chick,puppy and (formerly) cub. With previous discussion being to either just use those "sub categories" and/or suggesting using cub as the catch all. With cub being a furry porn slang term/tag and now deprecated. I also doubt people searching chick want to see baby raptors.

I looked for some simmilar posts using searches like (hatching or baby) no_humans post #7943531 post #7887629 post #7734876 (as well as a bunch of mistagged no humans posts post #2680660)

I think we need this tag because the alternative is having a thousand different 1-post tags like baby anomalocaris or baby opossum - and still not being able to search baby animals all at once.

Since the tag is already in use on 12 posts I am unable to recreate the previous bur
imply kitten -> baby_animal
imply puppy -> baby_animal
imply chick -> baby_animal
imply duckling -> baby_animal
imply foal -> baby_animal

Would it work to nuke them first or should I manually clean those to do the bur then add them back? Edit:nvm it's deprecated.

create implication kitten -> young_animal
create implication puppy -> young_animal
create implication chick -> young_animal
create implication duckling -> young_animal
create implication cygnet -> young_animal
create implication foal -> young_animal
create alias young_animal -> baby_animal
remove alias young_animal -> baby_animal

(For anyone reading this not in the discord there were some technical issues with burs for umbrella tags)

So while we wait for this to be dealt with, here is a recreation of the old bur just using my other previously proposed name so people can vote.

I have been a bit frustrated with some danbooru tagging culture that has resulted in some more overly fragmented tagging practices like this recently, so I really appreciate this BUR/post. Especially since I've run into this exact tag/issue before.

I am wondering though, whats changed now compared to the last time this was made a BUR? Perhaps just different voters/enough time thats passed that proves the concept isn't really working? But it feels like a bit of a philosophical change too, compared to the current tagging culture, so im curious. Or is this seen as way more of an exceptional case?

I think it's mostly a mix of the then solution of banning cub not working not to mention the above image plus a general cultural shift. In my experience BURs citing one or a few posts actually tend to change more minds than burs citing multiple posts as proof something isn't working.

bumping this one again because I really hope it gets approved and think it needs to be (if its rejected for legitimate reasons then fine, but I'm hoping this doesn't fall thru the cracks!)

You don't need to bump BURs. Threads with pending BURs are automatically bumped when there's five days left, and then again if the BUR times out. BURs can be tracked by other means, as well. Admins usually wait the full duration of a BUR (a month and a half iirc) to allow as much time as possible for people to voice their opinions.

You shouldn't bump threads if you don't actually have anything to contribute to the discussion. If it does time out then you can ask why, sometimes admins do just forget to check BURs, or have some other reason to let it time out.

I think having baby animal be an umbrella tag for kittens, puppies etc makes sense. "cute baby animals" is definitely something that should be easily findable.

create implication calf_(animal) -> baby_animal
create implication lamb -> baby_animal
create implication tiger_cub -> baby_animal
create implication baby_penguin -> baby_animal
create implication fawn -> baby_animal
create implication fawn -> deer

A couple more baby animals.

@Confetto Calf is also the term for other animals, anything from moose to I think whales (though the later might be tagged something like calf_(whale). Other than that yes. Seems to be used only for cows on danbooru, so we need to figure out what we do with moose calves and the like.

Merriam-Webster's Dictionary said:

calf (noun)
1 a. : the young of the domestic cow
also : that of a closely related mammal (such as a bison)
b : the young of various large animals (such as the elephant or whale)

I think "calf" is widely understood to mean a baby cow by default and, even if it's technically correct to call various sorts of baby animals "calves", we won't need to worry about the lone word being slapped on random bovids (unless it's a space bar accident while trying to be more specific.) As for those other animals it seems fine to me to have tags like moose_calf and whale_calf too.
