Being such an ancient tag, it should probably be an alias instead of a rename.

What do you mean? In general, unless the old name is straight up wrong (which is definitely not the case here), an alias shoudl be preferred.

In the majority of cases where you're trying to change the name of a tag, you should be using the alias keyword. The difference between aliasing and renaming is that an alias will leave a permanent redirect of the antecedent tag to the consequent and another tag can't be created with the older name. This makes it so that people who search with the antecedent tag will still get results of the consequent tag.

As this is a character that has been tagged as early as 2012, and in line with usual protocol, this should be an alias instead of a rename. I downvoted specifically because you aren't aliasing to the new name. There are only a small number of cases where any older tag, be it artist or otherwise, should be renamed rather than aliased.
