It's probably because of that part on the waritama:
Kusudama can also be used to refer to a type of decoration that is displayed and split open for celebrations. This decoration is more specifically called waritama (割り玉; lit. split ball).
Even though they're quite different, if some people refer to them with the same name, wouldn't this cause problems? (Answer is probably "probably not there's like 50 posts anyway", but still)

All of the results for 薬玉 on Pixiv are kusudama balls made of flowers (which they were before they were primarily origami), and Google returns these as well - typically the ones made of herbs and flowers, with a hanging tassel, but also some woven ones and origami ones. I do see a few confetti balls, but not very many.
Either way the alias isn't great if it is ambiguous. I think "traditional kusudama" could be used for the plant/woven/origami ones.
