The purpose of the rename command is to rename the tag and everything linking to it, but does not create a redirection from the old name to the new one. Aliases also rename the tag, its wiki, and everything linking to it, but they create a redirection from the old name to the new one, so it can be found using the old name.

Oh, thank you. So why is the rename command even necessary at all? Couldn't we just excuse that command altogether and have the renaming function be done by aliases and unaliasing only?

To encourage people to move tags properly instead of by hand. There used to be a problem with people moving artist tags by hand without telling anyone because before the only option was to request an alias, and they viewed that as unnecessary or too much work.
