Heh, we have people with well over 20,000 favorites here. There's no rule about how many or what you can favorite, so whether or not it's absurd doesn't matter. People have lots of different philosophies as to what gets a 'favorite'.

I personally tend to my favs a lot, and so the fact I fav something means much. I have an informal limit of 1% of total posts faved that would mean I'd really need to pay closer attention to what I favourite, but so far it's never been reached, and I've oftentimes run into pics I wanted to fav only to discover I've done so, so I'm pretty happy overall. Personally I think it's a good test, if after a couple of months you'd still totally favourite most of your favs, you're doing it properly. That, and just going through your list every once in a while.
I have 100-something favorites. I only favorite something if I'm really amazed by it. If it's just a good image, I'll just +1 it.
Recently I've also taken to favoriting stuff I uploaded myself just so it's easier for me to find it back later, so I sometimes use them as impromptu bookmarks.
Anyway, the way you use favorites is up to you. I just think the more favorites you have, the less functional they are, so I like to keep mine pretty tight.
I had somewhere in the thousands-range but I recently removed all of them to start fresh (thanks to Endless Danbooru and tab+enter key for making that only take about 15 minutes). Part of the reason was because I sometimes just feel like starting fresh and it makes me feel good, but also because I realized I was just favoriting anything that had to do with particular copyrights/characters/artists/etc I liked, or because I thought a picture was at least half decent and deserved the +1 score that automatically came with favoriting it.
Now I'm just trying to favorite stuff I really like and +1-ing all the stuff I would have just mindlessly favorited before, because the way I was going it would have just been easier to type in the name of a tag to see what was on my favorites.
I don't think I'll ever have too many favourites on Danbooru, to be honest. The one or two images I do think I'll eventually get around to favouriting (on top of the ones I have already) are as much simply examples of the art I'm uploading as what I do think is exceptional material.
I recently decided to have fav:memegui -rating:safe as my fap repository for unsorted images rather than a big old "unsorted" folder on my hard drive.
User Dragon Samurai maybe be overdoing it though.
