Actually, in Heaven's Feel it's said that...
He was quite the good guy when He was a normal human. He tried to obtain the Holy Grail because He realised that in order to destroy the evils he needed an immortal life, so he obtained a "sort of" immortality thanks to that.... things... If I'm not wrong, He was one of the creator of the Holy Grail or, at least, He was friend of the First Eizbern (how the hell was it written?) Grail Container.

I played the novel a long time ago, so if someone readed what i wrote and found out some mistake feel free to correct me.

He was in love with Justeaze Lizrich von Einzbern, the homunculus who became the core of the Great Grail. He was sad to see her sacrifice her life like that and so to honour her he wanted to complete the Grail no matter what. But since he couldn't achieve it in his lifetime, he obtained pseudo-immortality with his worms, but his mental state deteriorated over the centuries and he forgot about his original wish.
