Either way, we won't need to worry about the author running out of plot. With explosions, characters can say any old thing.

Because there were a lot of crash landings in WWII. Pilots with bare minimum training trying to land shot up planes on grass runways tends to end badly. Watch some old footage of the air war. Crash landings galore.
