Is...is this breaking the fourth wall?

    Or...the 3.5th wall? What...I...I am confused now.

She's a "game" character to begin with, so that's bad word choice on Suika's part (she doesn't say "galge" or "eroge," etc.)... But...is she talking to the player, or talking to us OH GOD I AM CONFUSED

I think it's just using the eroge-style conversation to speak with us, saying she doesn't want to be a game character/in Touhou and would rather be real, idunno.

Considering Suika was one of the characters strong enough to survive at the end of CtC, thinking about that makes this image all the more interesting.

It really kind of surprises me that I haven't seen a Touhou-based eroge yet. I mean, I'm sure someone has tried, but no large-scale efforts have been made as far as I know.

Of course, that could be because no one can agree on which girls MUST be heroines.

Actually, there is a solid answer for that. There are Touhou visual novels but barely any eroges because of fear. Doujin makers are too afraid to piss people off.
"Rawr rawr Yukari would never act like that" etc etc.

That seems a little silly to me. I mean, it's not like doujinshi and webcomics portray the characters with 100% consistency. Or even 50% consistency. As long as they treat characters mostly respectfully, what's the big deal? And it's not like there's a shortage of possible plot ideas. Hell, I've got a couple.

And of course it need not necessarily be eroge. I wouldn't mind a Touhou VN without the sexy.

As long as Mokou was a prominent character, anyway.

The closest i've been able to find to a Touhou "Dating sim" is http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Alice_to_Eternal
And even if you do count it, it's just for 1 character rather than having several others to choose from.
Everything else I've found have been just visual novels or just sex games.

I believe alot of that fear also has to do with that making an eroge would just be alot more work compared to a simple Manga doujin. Thats why the Doujin game's we've seen of Touhou have ranged to practically every genre EXCEPT Dating sim Eroge. So it's really something to work hard on like a 5 Touhou girl dating sim only for haters to come by and start complaining that certain characters don't "Act right".

A doujin manga? Most people would tend to walk away if the character being potrayed(even if it's in a good light) isn't to their liking. But spend a couple of months making an Eroge? The idea would make people flock to it but that's a double edge sword. Then you'd get people complaining "WTF, i wasted my money on this shitty game that made Remilia Charismatic! I was expecting the MoeMoe Remilia!" or even "Why the hell is Reimu a tsundere!?".

I remember getting into this kinda conversation with my friend before.

I suppose I can understand that. Putting a work you poured your heart into in the "market" so to speak, leaving it vulnerable to criticism is hard. And painful. I'm not exactly one to criticize others for lacking the courage to do it.

I suppose I'm partially being inspired by Katawa Shoujo. I mean, if a bunch of strangers on 4chan can turn a simple sketch into a full-fledged game, why can't a much more coordinated fan-base take a very established series and do the same? But the point you bring up does shed some light. The difference in this case is that people already have preexisting notions about how Reimu is like this and Yukari is like that. Of course, most of these interpretations are actually fanon, but that won't deter the haters.

Still, maybe someday. It'd be nice.

Regarding Touhou VNs, there's the western effort Eastern Starlight Romance, currently under development. The available demo already has a fair amount of content.

I'm one person who wants to be a doujinshi writer and game developer. I planned several doujinshi and am developing a visual novel-like simulation (not exactly a dating sim) with a friend. Well, I'm not going to be scared enough of "But my XXX doesn't act that way!" to stop my imagination from running wild.

*Fist bump* dude, i feel the same way. I'm doing the exact same thing myself. And if people don't like how I put a spin on certain characters, well, then whatever.

There are already multiple touhou eroge out there. They usually focus around a single or a select few characters, such as dai-chan_to_issho! and the one named chuugoku something.

    To my knowledge, there's:
    - Wriggle Lui (Wriggle)
    - Alice to Eternal (Alice)
    - Touhou Night (Reimu)
    - First Barrage of Scarlet Sisters (Remi and Flan with
helpings of Patchy, Reimu, Marisa and Rumia)
    - Kami Koi - (Shinki and the Makai Crew)
    - Gensou kaze inroku inkou wa bouki ningen no tameni
    (Moriya Shrine)
    - Dai-chan to Issho (Daiyousei with a bit of Cirno and
    Rumia)
    - 厄って神ー! (Hina with a bit of Nitori and Suwako)
    - 説教!仙人娘! (Kasen with a bit of Komachi and Futo)
    - Touhou Chinshikyou ~ The Rainbow Dream (Patchouli)

Those are the visual novels/eroge I can remember. There are more, of course, but my mind draws a blank on exact titles at the moment.

I based my earlier assumption of there being a lack of proper Touhou visual novels on the "other games" list on one of the Touhou-wikis, though it appears I either misread or it didn't list the above.

But I'm just still hoping to see a multiple-girl, mutliple-path type story, seeing many of the sights the world has to offer. Maybe someday.

I kind of like the idea of a KS-style format: Act 1 involves meeting everyone, earning points, and at the end, you end with a single girl and the story expands from there.

    @Touy
I know and played all of those. And IMO i just can't help but not really call those eroge/dating sims in a true sense. Having only 1 girl to go for makes it more along the visual novel genre for me. Especially Dai-chan to Issho. You start off with Daiyousei already at your feet. Then there are a large majority of sex games out there too.

    Suika is strong, yes, but...

    1) CtC isn't canon (and more people other than Suika could have survived, or Suika herself could be another victim. My point is that there was no basis for why she should be one of the survivors, other than the author's mood. :p)

    2) I don't like how CtC is so popular and other good scripts (including excellent ones such as Phantasm Romance 2.5 Plus -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6Ev6wJdJyk -- and Phantasmagoria Trues) remain obscure. (two things contribute to my preference for these two games: I'm able to separate canon from fanon, and I'm more entertained by interesting/fun/engaging gameplay as a mental exercise)

finally, I guess that, regarding Suika's situation, we don't have much choices other than trying to talk to Yukari so she frees Suika from the realm of fantasy (video-game-verse included). Or.. finding a way towards Gensokyo (she wants to drink with the player, this doesn't necessarily mean that she has to move out of Gensokyo :D)

LOL at bringing in canon in a Touhou discussion.
