The whole point of his story arc is that liking so-called girly things like cute toys and sewing doesn't mean you're gay (just like how Naoto can do "male things" without having to actually be a man). To say he IS gay is to undermine and reverse the entire point of that. It's not about being gay, it's not saying it's wrong to be gay, it's simply saying that peoples' interests and hobbies can cause them to be labelled, and then person in question starts to worry about that label.
