All but Sakuya are also in Marisa harem, iirc. So it's like... doubly odd.

I was more looking for a canon reason. I generally dislike Touhou fanon. However, I can't disagree with you.

Just FYI, according to the Pixiv description, they're eating fried pasta(?!), and in the comments, the artist insists that the reasoning behind which characters were selected is a secret.

I have suspicion about this:

Alice doesn't have a midboss in her Perfect Cherry Blossom stage.
Patchouli has Koakuma.
Nitori doesn't have a midboss in her Mountain of Faith stage.
Marisa doesn't have a midboss in her Imperishable Night stage.
Sakuya doesn't have a midboss in her Embodiment of Scarlet Devil stage.

But that's just a theory of mine.

You could also say that Nitori is the only one you can't use in the fighting games. All good reasons.

Also appropriate for the pool as Marisa is the only one of the 5 with her eyes closed.
