Try go way, way out in the countryside, far from any artificial lights, on a clear, moonless night, when the milky way is high in the sky. The nighttime sky seen from big cities is washed out by light pollution and few stars can be seen.

Yeah, the "real" night sky if you can get away from the lights of cities etc actually looks better than in this pic.
