Ok, now it makes (a bit more) sense, the gaps in the translation plus the original "So you wish to be fluffy too?" threw me off into some weird shave-momiji's-hair-and-make-it-into-a-coat theory
It's a Tsundere breakdown. The MC asked Momiji if he could pet her fur. Momiji acted sort of tsundere, saying that she wouldn't mind, since she had great confidence in the fluffiness of her fur. But after that the MC just stopped. All that confidence sort of shattered, in truth she really wanted to be petted. My dog was sort of tsundere too... always acting cool and tough. Sometimes I would tease him by pretending to go pet him. When he saw my hand reaching for his head he would stand there, really still, looking away. Then I would just stop. Then the breakdown... he would start to get anxious, looking at the hand and then away like "I don't really mind... really..." After a while, and mainly if I turned away he would follow me and whine a bit... Weird dog... I miss him.
