Because the ships were clearly designed by Moomins.

If I was able to post weren't it for the posting limit, I'd totally say that.

Ship captions are almost totally machine translations. Anyone with better knowledge of Finnish and/or sailing terms, please feel free to adjust them.

Ran it by a friend; the finnish is actually pretty bullshit, so no worries.

That's OK, the original Finnish is probably also machine translated with some English worlds added.

"Ship ulottuvuus muuntaminen" is probably trying to say "Ulottuvuuksien välinen alus" or "Inter-dimensional ship". The rest of the terms are probably more correct in English translations than in Finnish, but I'm not expert on naval terms.

So basically Touhou is slowly becoming one of those lands of fantasy stories that come from ages of novels Oz, Narnia, and the like. Middle Earth might not be that far behind save that it isn't quite so magical at the others.

Well, Gensou Koumuten's version of Gensokyo is like that. The best guide for the "real" direction of Touhou would be the original games. Fan interpretations go in all directions.

Gensokyo is already connected to the 'outside world' which in the games' timeline is only magical in the Clarke's Third Law sense if at all. With that in mind there's probably nothing stopping the dimensional ships from traveling to and from any given world.

I would be very interested in an adventure story in this world going around, looking for new dimensions.

Dang, Aya wrote a great article to wrap up this story.

It would be no exaggeration to say that Gensou Land's precipitous development was brought about by the creation of these ships. Only a limited portion of magical engineers and ESPers were able to achieve physical interplanetary transport. Dimensional conversion ships have made it possible to carry anyone and anything all at once, safely and in mass quantities, to all manner of fantasy lands. Because of this, interworld cultural exchange and foreign trade have grown explosively. All manner of values and lifestyles of the people on the various worlds have changed entirely. These are very likely the prime reason anyone has become able to travel offworld. The number of alien travelers who want to try going to other worlds has increased rapidly by the year, and various worlds have been seething with an unprecedented offworld travel boom: Dimensional harbors are being constructed one after the other, and a grand-scale battle for advertising sightseeing areas is going on. However, amidst all that, other circumstances are quietly occurring among the fantasy worlds: There are sightseeing areas which, in contrast, are becoming obsolete because they could not get on board the offworld travel boom, and native traditional cultures that have been passed along for millennia are vanishing one after the other... Among these is a place this reporter visited with her family when she was little, a place of memories that are more dear now than ever. This reporter believes that memories of travel are treasures, and she very much would like to have people do their best for sightseeing areas that are losing their vitality, for the sake of the dear memories of the people they once visited as well.
