Of course the humans of Gensokyo are supposed to be descendants of powerful yokai-hunters, but we never see anything like that...

That's always what has annoyed me most about these kinds of doujins. Yeah, people still get eaten on occasion in canon-Gensokyo (in fact, given how tough the adults should be its more likely the children are the ones most commonly targeted by youkai that attack the village), but Akyuu herself has stated that it rarely happens any more.

You'd think we'd see some sign that its not wise to mess with the Human Village but most doujin make it look like they are all helpless without Keine, Mokou, Marisa, and Reimu to protect them. Even the spin-off manga seem guilty of this.

I once saw a video about Rumia and Flandre becoming friends after they switch outfits so Flandre can go out exploring while Rumia covers for her at the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Earlier on, Rumia attacked a farmer... who pulled out a Spellcard in order to defend himself! He lost anyway, but instead of getting eaten he comically got away with a chunk bitten out of his butt.

I liked how that shows the Spellcard rules were doing their job... that is, giving humans a fighting chance in case no mikos were around to protect them. That's something a lot of fans forget; the Spellcard Rules were made for the regular folk of Gensokyo to have better odds of survival, not to better protect Reimu from getting killed while on the job.

Indeed. Gensokyo exists for youkai. They even say that in SoPM.

Doesn't mean that they're all youkai hunters though.
