People from overseas even came to Kōrōmu. I was thrilled.

I think I managed most of the conversation, but there were parts I didn't really understand. I think he was probably saying, "Are there other friends coming here from the U.S.?" (^^;)

Reader-added tags include "It's a learning experience, Kogasa-san", "Can't whistle, eh, Kisume-san?" and "The more troublesome it is, the more friends betray you, eh, Kogasa-san?"

The poll hopes to find help elsewhere:

Who looks like they'd be able to speak English?
    • Alice
    • Marisa
    • Patchouli
    • The Scarlet Sisters
    • Yukarin

Anyone but Marisa. The scarlet sisters should be able to speak English, they were from Europe anyway.
Well, for anything there's always Yukarin.

Yukari, wihtout doubt. The border between understanding and not understanding is easily moved, after all...

Or just manipulate the border between any language gap.

Patchy and Scarlet Sisters seem to be the most candidate to be able to speak english without any help, as they're from europe.

Alice and Marisa, not so sure... probably can't

I didn't think about it this way before... but Alice has an English surname. Patchy's name is kind of Engrishy, suggesting that she (or whoever gave her the name) might not actually be a fluent speaker, and assuming that the Scarlets are indeed related to old vampire blood, that would mean they're from the Eastern Europe of centuries (?) ago, where not that many people spoke great English.
That being said, Yukarin is probably the safest answer. (Also 17.)

I pick them all, Marisa as well because she has borrowed and read a lot of books. Chances are she could've been learning a few languages in the process.

    The safest answer?
    All of thee above.

    - Alice's name IS English, she's from european folklore after all (well, I think french...)

    - Marisa, well... again, her name is English, believe it or not. That and it's pretty hard to be a western magic user and not be able to speak English in a semi-modern society. (Of course, you could go with the Latin arguement, but...)

    - Patchouli, again. Name. That and she's suppoesedly a genius on that level anyway, so I'd expect her to be multi-lingual.

    - The Scarlet Sisters are, let's face it, from all inclination they're actually French (not proveable, but this is a fannon question anyway). But I still think that it'd be safe to say that they both could speak English, seeing as the Vampire Hunters were originally an English Organization (try fighting someone in a practical war when you can't understand them).

    - Yukari? Well, that's a given, it's implied that she's not even Japanese!

Based on the illustration of Perfect Memento in the Strict Sense, it looks like the Mansion is actually a blend of English and French architecture. Maybe a bit more French than English, and I'd hazard the guess of early 1800s.
It stands to reason that if they were the original occupants of the mansion, they'd speak English, given that the 1800s was the height of the British Empire, when English became the second lingua franca, in addition to French.

I don't think Alice or the Scarlet sisters would work.
If I'm not mistaken alice's theme song is "The doll maker of Bucuresti" and Remilia pre battle theme is the young descendant of Thepes. Which means, they probably are both Romanian.

It's great to have worldwide popularity, isn't it, Kogasa-san? Look at it as a great chance to learn more English, and have some fun! (I wonder if the person in question posts here?)

For the poll, Yukarin, because even if she doesn't know, she can bridge the language gap easily.

Alice Margatroid is an English name, so it's possible she just studied in Romania. Then again her mother is named Shinki and rules over the underworld, so who really knows.

Marisa I doubt knows English, even if she is a Western-style magic user. I wouldn't be surprised if she copied her outfit out of a book.

Patchy probably knows English, if for no other reason than to read English-language books.

Scarlet sounds like an English surname, though the sisters likely come from Eastern Europe (think Dracula) and have French first names (likely due to the fact that French was the preferred tongue of the Russian Nobility, and possibly others in Eastern Europe).

And Yukari can manipulate any language barrier so that's no problem.

Yukari's a no-brainer. She can manipulate the borders between language and language comprehension to the point that she might not need to learn any languages at all.

The Scarlets would be next up considering their (possible) European origins, given that it's normal to be well-versed in multiple languages.

    Patchy's about 50-50.

Alice is about 75-25. 25 because she might be the type to look like she knows English when in actuality she does not. Also because I reminded of that one doujin involving Sanae thinking Alice is a foreigner.

Marisa might know out of sheer boredom.

You realize Shinki isn't actually Alice's mother as far as canon is concerned, right? That's a fan theory based on Shinki's assertion that she created all of Makai, which is where Alice was when the heroines first encountered her. She may or may not actually be from Makai in the first place - since it's said that she used to be human, she probably isn't.

French, spanish and italian names are pretty similar to romanian names. After all, they all are romance languagues.
I think Alice's and the scarlets names were anglicized, to make it sound more natural. Romanian nobility, at the time of the scarlets birth and throughout history, openly refused to use non native names and titles, making the Scarlets and Alice's name(s) most likely a translation.

About Shinki, like someone else pointed out, she has apparently been retconned.

Alice is confirmed in canon to have transformed from a human to a youkai, through magic. She was originaly human.

To me, Shikieiki and Komachi most probably can speak English.

Then in Yakumo family, Ran should be able as well. 9-tail fox is believed not only having supernatural power, but inhumane mental prowess beyond any human as well. An animal whom able to speak human language.. If they can speak human's language of their country of origin (Chinese or Japanese), why can't English as well?
