It's important to have a well-rounded team. Yuuka needs to find a squirtle next, since the original starters were always the best.
It honestly doesn't make sense that in the pokemon world, some of the "Top" trainers are only monotype. I honestly expect that the gym leaders are under actual contract to stay monotype so traveling trainers have a chance to beat them.

To be fair, in recent games Gym Leaders will always have at least one counter in their roster which will proceed to fuck you over big time if didn't prepare a counter-counter.

This is pretty much the case for Cheren in BW2; he didn't use his old pokemon when he became the gym leader, and he even grumbled a bit to Prof. Juniper about not being able to do so after you beat him.

I saw it that way too actually but even so. Kinda hard to say if someone is a master of fire pokemon when they all get done in by 1 under-leveled Water pokemon 1 shotting them.
How would one even grade "Specialist" type of trainers anyway? The only thing that comes to mind for me is having same types vs same types. Like to be a Gym Leader for a fire gym, you face against other trainers with the 1 rule being only using fire pokemon.
Well, to be fair, there is something similar in the BW2 World Tournament. There's a tourny where you're only allowed to use one type of Pokemon and you fight other people with the same restriction. That really is the only feasible way to get a Gym Leader position, I'd imagine.

You mean a mid level as if a pokemon is too low leveled, not even a type advantage would help them. If they're able to one shot while surviving then the trainer is doing their job right. Though that title isn't much considering how weak the Fire type is in the big picture.

The job of the Gym Leaders is to be a test for the new trainers, helping them learn the ropes. Not ROFLstomping them with perfectly-balanced high-level teams.
