That's awesome. Other than just putting an image next to itself, how do you get the stereoscopic effect when the viewer crosses his eyes?

Also, is 3d the right tag for this sort of thing? (Based on other 3d-tagged posts, I'd say not.) If not, what is?

As to the first, no idea.

As to the second, stereogram seems to have been used at some point in the past, although I'm not sure it's the main tag for it.

There was also one in stereo, but I'm moving them all to stereogram, since stereo has a more obvious meaning.

Here's how it works: Our brains perceive depth based on the slightly different images that each eye sees. By focusing your right eye on the left image and your left eye on the right image (by crossing your eyes) your brain tells you that the slight difference between the two means that there is a change in depth. The perfect optical illusion!

That's really cool! Thanks for the description Fyzz, I never understood how it worked before so I could never figure it out.

I must be doing it wrong. No matter how hard I try crossing my eyes they just move out of focus.

When you cross your eyes, to begin with There will be 4 pics, 2 moving away from each other and one moving towards each other. Cross your eyes just enough until there are only 3 pictures and the one in the middle will seem to have depth.

I've trained my eyes enough from watching other 3d stuff to automatically lock when the 3d image shows up

still don't get it, I see 3 pictures then where the left and right one are fuzzy but the middle one is just the same with no depth?

There's likely more detail than you think. See how you do with post #267697

That one helped me re-adjust for going cross-eyed (I hadn't done it in a long time)

protip: if the middle images you get when you cross your eyes don't converge, shrink the picture a lil' (ctrl+- in Chrome)

I can only do it when I hold something thin in front of my eyes (like a paperclip) and sort of "train" my eyes to cross properly. At first, I could cross the two images, but they were out of focus. When I got the image to focus, the effect blew my fuckin' mind.
