Even if its not about pain, any position besides right behind the gun will result in misses at long range, the recoil in large bore rifles is different from something say a .30-06 or .338 lapua. The recoil actually starts affecting you slightly before the bullet has time to exit the barrel (because of longer length past 20" and the comparably shorter gas system). This is a small shift in point of aim, but at long ranges 500 yards excess, the error can be as great as a couple of yards!
