It helps that Alien 3 had no budget, and had to be re-written several times because all they could afford was an abandoned warehouse to shoot the movie in.
It's not so much sequel fatigue as the complete derailment of the franchise due to people forcing the movie to completion in spite of them really being better off just abandoning it and trying again when they got more funding.
