i think you got the right idea. this didn't really start a trend, although it's pretty meme-worthy. the only thing i can think of that's close to this is that fake game reset in Batman: Arkham Asylum.
that being said, this part was a friggen nightmare to do on European Extreme. the fission mailed screen actually happens INSIDE ANOTHER FISSION MAILED SCREEN which means 1/16ths of a screen to work with, and widescreen TVs weren't really that widespread back then... yeah.
