I just noticed this after looking through these again, but the sides of the glasses are marked with the alchemical symbols for the Sun, Moon, and the five planets that correspond to the elements in the Chinese elemental system. (Although you have to convert from Western symbolism for planets, where they were usually associated with metals, into the Chinese association of planets with elements: Mars -> Fire, Mercury -> Water, Jupiter -> Wood, Venus -> Metal, Saturn -> Earth.)
