And Naoto actually does give you food if you romance her, too. She makes some chocolate she gives out at night or in dungeons. They all actually give out food and items. But that wouldn't be much of a joke.
Ah, that might explain it. I didn't realize that because I never actually used any of these items. I never really had the need for any items, except maybe a soma in Margaret's battle.
