Remi is a 500 years old proud girl that has spent an indeterminate time living among japanese speakers. She wouldn't remain ignorant of their writing for too long (mostly because it'd be shameful for a lady to be illiterate).

I always thought that she'd only come to Japan (and Gensokyo) relatively recently, given how nobody really knew of her before the Scarlet Mist incident, and Sakuya and company weren't really recognized despite being quite... striking in all respects. I wouldn't have expected Remi to pick up reading Japanese that quickly.

Patchy, maybe - she's spent ages reading everything, so learning new languages to consume books in would be old hat.

Read Aya's interview with Flandre in Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red. You'll learn that Remilia knows even old japanese.

Found the full book elsewhere. The way the interview went, it's equally possible Remi was saving face. I think Yukari or maybe Akyuu would be able to read the remains of the meteor too, but they weren't nearby.

Akyuu, not likely, Kosuzu, definitely. In Forbidden Scrollery Akyuu goes to Suzunaan to get books deciphered and printed.

Akyuu's been around at last 1200 years, IIRC. I wasn't sure if she might have some familiarity or not. Yukari is more likely to be able to. And yes, Kosuzu's power to understand any book would help. Where it works on all writing, or just books and scrolls is something else.

And how did we get from admiring cute Satou Kibi art to this?
