Summoners no longer exist in the lore. Riot has quietly written them and the Institute of War out of the setting. Rather than being someone that works with and manipulates the champion, we are simply going to be the champion...which sucks.

Really? The summoner's tab is still on the EU page at least, calling the players summoners. Granted, most of the actual lore on the site seems to have gone dodo, but the profiles seem to be alive and talk about the Institute of War as usual. Or at least the older ones do.

Most telling is that when they gave Sejuani her visual update, the omitted the word "summoner" from her dialogue. She used to mention you, the player, directly. Now she doesn't.

All new champions and their lore within the last year do not mention the Institute of War, let alone summoners. Riot has also stated that they don't like "summoners" and the Institute of War because they think it limits their creative options...which is bullshit.

Something tells me that Riot wants to do more than the MOBA game. They have over a 1000 employees. They're hiring people that have worked on all kinds of games.

...They're going to create an MMO.

It's such a shame. Instead of retconning summoners, they should expand on summoners and the bonds the characters have with their summoners. It's a lovely kind of 4th wall breaking that few games do, and for lore fans like me it adds to how I feel about characters.

Bleh, oh well. I guess I'll just happily ignore that retcon.

Until Sona gets a rework, the Summoners will still exists. Why she? because she have the most obvious references to them in the game. "Only you can hear me summoner...~" "From my mind to yours" and things like that.

So, you base your oppinion only on one champion update? sigh... Then go on and tell everyone that Riot going to remove lore alltogether since they removed lore button from pvp client.

That is entirely possible, one of the CCP Games (makers of EVE Online) staff joined Riot in January.
