Yamato was one of those ships that got hit in the wrong place and went up in a ball of flames.

So, that means Musashi was built to withstand more attacks than Yamato?

Like Steak said, got hit in the wrong place.

DamaCon or mitigation aside, generally if the fire has reaches places like fuel tank, ammunition storage or the Japanese's pure-oxygen powered long lance torpedoes, it will be huge firework of disaster.
Yamato's 46cm shoots 1460kg bullets. She needs a lot of explosives to throw that.

Earlier in the war, TECHNICALLY true. Musashi had a fire-resistant paint on her decks until the US started pushing the Japanese back in the Pacific, while Yamato didn't.

However, Musashi took roughly 19 torpedoes and 17 bombs (sources differ, depending who you ask) over the course of several attacks over 5-6 hours. It then took her another 3-4 hours to eventually capsize and sink.

Yamato, on the other hand, was sent on what was basically a suicide run, and the US just systematically took her apart with precise (for the time) hits, hence why she took less damage to sink compared to her sister.

Ah, I see now. So basically, Musashi pretty much had her "Last Stand" (sorry 'bout the CoD reference) before she sank with her 3-4hr window. I'd assume that the Japanese on board the ship were able to flee or be transferred onto another?

Yamato was hit it here here and there, boom she's gone. Interesting how the sea battles of the wars were played out, since I've been reading up on the land battles (Tanks, mainly).

Shimakaze rescued survivors from Maya boarding on Musashi before sinking, then Kiyoshimo, Isokaze and Hamakaze rescued the rest of her crew.

1,376 crew were rescued from Musashi with additional 635 crew from Maya, while 1,023 of her crew were lost, either dead or missing.

Kiyoshimo and Hamakaze detached from the group and headed for Manila while Shimakaze and Isokaze proceed to escort the center force. During the Battle off Samar, Shimakaze played no role in the engagement while Isokaze assisted on sinking USS Johnston DD-557.

It's not that Musashi was more durable, it's that the US Navy learned from sinking Musashi first. Those red marks along their sides are torpedo hits. Note how Musashi has quite a few on both sides of her, while Yamato's torpedo hits are almost exclusively on one side. When the US Navy attacked Musashi, they were dropping torpedoes on both sides. This caused her to flood more or less evenly, letting her survive for that much longer due to her immense reserves of buoyancy. Yamato, on the other hand, was exclusively attacked on one side. The weight of water flooding in on just one side caused a catastrophic loss of stability which led to Yamato capsizing.

Musashi's hit points were almost balanced on both sides so it kept afloat and took more hits before finally going down. The key to sinking a ship is to attack one side so the water intake can weigh one side down and tip it. Musashi got trapped in a crossfire so the water intake was balanced on both sides.

Damage report of the two ships are quite varied between documents. Reference: Understanding Pacific War through the Weapons
