Actually, it's sadder than that - the admiral of the operation (as well as the captain of Yamato) went down with Yamato, so Yukikaze had nobody to return to.

(Although Suzutsuki, Fuyuzuki, and Hatsushimo also escaped... Suzutsuki/Fuyuzuki aren't kanmusu, though, and Hatsushimo got the dubious distinction of being the last to die in the war by running into a naval mine in her own waters, dropped by US air. Fuyuzuki and Suzutsuki (sister ships) are like Sakawa - arrived too late to do anything but get shot up in Ten-Go. Fuyuzuki then ran into an air-dropped mine, too, and was considered not worth repairing. She wound up srapped. Suzutsuki had her bow blown off in Ten-Go, but managed to limp back to port by throwing it in reverse the whole way. Never repaired. Scrapped.)

Yukikaze was then basically kidnapped and forced to work for Taiwan for the rest of her life, while Hibiki was taken away and forced to work for the USSR/brainwashed into believing her name was Veriny.

Fun times had by all.
