[KanColle] Yamato's in Trouble! [Historical Fact]

By the way, besides destroyers Tanikaze and Akigumo, Yamagumo was also there.

Yamato was torpedoed by a submarine at the end of 1943. The ship was able to maintain speed, but the torpedo defense system was actually breached at least in part due to defective design and their was significant flooding including into the turret magazines of the aft main battery. It took significant yard time to repair the damage. Overall it was actually a rather unimpressive showing given her sheer size and lead to proposals to modify her design, but for various reasons such was never done. For comparison the battleship North Carolina despite weighing tens of thousands of tons less was hit by a submarine torpedo with a larger charge around her most forward turret and sustained less damage and much less flooding.

Musashi took another submarine torpedo just a few months later and flooded just as badly. The Yamato class's sheer bulk provided fair protection from a single hit, but the actual design of their underwater defense and compartmentalization was in fact quite poor.

December 25, 1943, 180 nautical miles northeast of Truk, USN submarine USS Skate SS-305 detected the approaching Yamato from 27,300 yards. Skate wasn't that successful to gain an attacking position against the battleship until Yamato turns towards the submarine. At 05:18, Skate fires four torpedoes at Yamato, at 05:20, 1 MK-14A torpedo struck Yamato on the starboard hull near turret No. 3, The detonation rips a hole that extends some 15 feet downwards from the top of the blister and longitudinally some 75 feet between frames 151 and 173. The upper turret magazines flooded through a small hole punched in the longitudinal bulkhead.

The hole is caused by failure of the armor belt joint between the upper and lower side protection belts. The upper magazine for No. 3 turret floods. Yamato takes on about 3,000-tons of water. Yamagumo and Tanikaze dropped 6 depth charges but none of them hit Skate, after 30 minutes the destroyers departed from the area while three hours later, Skate leaves the area. Yamato arrives at Truk and undergoes emergency repairs by Akashi. On January 10, 1944, Yamato departed from Truk for Kure escorted by destroyers Michishio, Asagumo and Fujinami.

On January 16, 1944, Yamato arrived at Kure, she was docked for extensive repairs and to correct the deficiencies in her armor belt. A sloping plate is fitted at a 45-degree angle across the lower corner of the upper void compartment between the two longitudinal inboard bulkheads. This modification, proposed to run the full length of the citadel, is installed only in the area affected by the torpedo damage. On February 3, 1944, she was undocked and on February 25, 1944, she was docked again for refitting. On April 17, 1944, Yamato resumed active duty.

Weren’t you hit by a torpedo just now ?
    Huh?
It seems that most of the crew didn't even notice the torpedo hit.
    Ah, she's running.
    Let's get out of here!
Even though she got hit by torpedo... Higher speeds increase flooding.
    Splitter-splatter
    Thump, thump

    BOOM

    Ya, Yamato-neesan!
Ah, you’re right! It's flooding quite badly!
During Transport Operation Bo-1, Yamato took a direct torpedo hit from an enemy submarine! On December 25, the USS Skate struck the Yamato with a torpedo on the starboard stern while she was escorting troops and equipment from Yokosuka to Truk.
    Saaaan…?
A direct hit? A direct hit! A direct hit!
    A direct torpedo hit...
