Ryoko in Tenchi Muyo had an energy sword without needing any reference to Star Wars. Lucas does not have any copyright on the concept, just on the name Lightsaber, I think. There have been swords of light and flame all the way back to Babylon, so it's not as if there is no prior art.

beam saber kinda uses something called "Mega Particles" in gundam verse and has an e-cap (energy capacitor) to store power.

lightsaber uses a focusing crystal to generate the beam, in addition to the power cell.

Hilt design can be a point of differentiation, and the blade design. Lightsaber tends to be more cylindrical while beam saber can be bit irregular
