I'm vaguely reminded of a tactic in Navyfield waaay back when where if you had guns that elevated super high (like 70+ degrees) and you fired almost vertical and actually managed hit someone due to the silly way damage was calculated you could go through like any deck armor possible even with like five inch guns.

That is true, Bismarck's shells came in at almost straight down onto the deck of HMS Hood. Actually there is another ship that when down in a similar fashion, KMS Scharnhorst was sunk by gunfire from the HMS Duke of York
