    one day, one force, one heart
    If you break the characters for "one million, one heart" down into their component parts, they read "one day, one force, one heart"... The decomposition of the kanji characters (and omission of one stroke) are evident on the monument, see photo.
    in other words, "on the same day, as one force, with one heart";

    We deeply appreciate the efforts of everyone for supporting us as one million, with one heart. 「百万一心」 hyakuman isshin "one million, one heart" are the words carved on a stone steele at Yoshida Kooriyama castle (wikipedia: ja/en), erected under the orders of Sengoku period Daimyou Mouri Motonari, in lieu of hitobashira (lit. human pillar) human sacrifice, when difficulties were encountered in the construction of the walls of its honmaru (central bailey) during castle expansion works. Midori explains more below...
    which means: if everyone works together to combine their efforts, then anything can be accomplished. In the orginal context, this was an exhortation for all countrymen to unite together. Further reading: ja.wikipedia
