    That's impressive but...

How is Japan STILL so bad at CGI shading and integration? Are Ufotable and the guys that made Karas the only people that even heard of After Effects?

Because most studios either don't care enough or have the budget for it. (Why does the debris gravitate downwards? I'm pretty sure the "near by" planetary gravity isn't strong enough to counteract the explosions)

If most studios can barely handle normal 2D quality right, *cough* Toei*cough*, what makes you think that their CGI would be any better?
CGI has always meant to be something quick and easy so it doesn't have to be drawn frame by frame so of course there is going to be some major QUALITYs in it.

If you look at it very closely, most of them are responding to the explosions. Some are in fact heading upwards because of explosions on the lower hull. But most are blowing up from detonations on their megaparticle stores or even the Minovsky reactors feeding the turrets along the top of the ship, so the force pushes them generally 'downwards'.

I think a lot of the debris is "moving" in that direction largely because of how the camera is moving through the carnage.

I can't speak to Toei nowadays, but I know they were at the head of the animation industry for television syndication from 1966-1998.

Out of curiosity, what show/films are you referring to that was so unapologetic?

Cowboy Bebop had some great CGI space-stations and stuff in 1998. I don't know if it's totally fair to point a finger at the entire nation though. And I mean, the appeal of good CGI is only as deep as the narrative/ideas that are animated in said CGI, which is why despite how "realistic" the Ninja Turtles or the Autobots look in their new, expensive movies, what always holds them back is the shallow nature of their canons.

Newton's First Law: an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an external force. Unless there are continuous explosions going off "above" the screen, the debris should be not be traveling 'downward'.

What I want to know is why all these ships are bunched up together like this. How can any individual ship be expected to maneuver like that? and look at all the space around them that they could be using!

It makes it all the more funnier when you see that Sunrise/Bandai-Namco owns practically almost every god damn thing in the entertainment related market in Japan. You think they would at least spare a tiny bit more money from the bajillion amount of money coming in to increase their quality budget. But then again, cutting back on as much as possible while owning most of Japan is how they make the most money.
