First night, standard procedure. Or, it is for non-cowards that play on difficulties above peaceful (i.e. people unlike me). :x
Well, if you managed to stumble upon the pickaxe and furnace recipes (assuming a first time player who doesn't read the wiki), you can dig a house into the nearest mountain or rocky surface and start mining.
Then you get carried away and starve yourself to death. 'least, that's what happened to me on my first time. At least I managed to shove my stuff into a chest before dying.

Would kind of defeat the purpose of being on survival at all, though.
When I did this I left the top open just so it wouldn't be pitch black, haha.

True. In fact, if you can manage to harvest about 16 logs or so and find a nice bit of mountain (at least five blocks deep), then you should easily have enough to dig a hole and even make some torches without needing to rely on coal (since charcoal is actually renewable). But first-time players (on non-peaceful settings) probably won't be acting that quickly anyway.
All the more reason I feel kind of sad for depriving myself of such a terrifying experience by setting my first world to peaceful as soon as night fell.
