Before I got into Kancolle I also thought all warships were battleships and "Destroyers" were the strongest battleships because they destroy everything.

I know better now, but still. Misleading name.

They were originally called "torpedo-boat destroyers", before being shortened to just "destroyer". Interestingly a similar naming convention (and later abbreviation) is present among most European navies, even with all the different languages (e.g. Ger: Torpedobootzerstörer->Zerstörer)

This ship class was developed in response to the widespread use of torpedoes, which allow even small boats to take down capital ships. Naturally a lot of navies decided to 'cheese' this by building a lot of cheap torpedo boats to spam torps. To counter this, navies built torpedo-boat destroyers (essentially upscaled torpedo boats with guns instead of torpedos) to intercept and destroy/drive-off torpedo boats before they can come anywhere close to their bigger (and more expensive) ships.

Eventually people started adding more armor and weaponry to these ships, but they still retained their primary function of acting as escorts for capital ships. Of course, their speed and armament allow them to fulfill a multitude of roles, including supplanting the earlier role filled by torpedo boats.

The Japanese literally call their destroyers "expulsion vessels" since they, well, "drive off" or "expel" small ships/boats. (Modern day JMSDF call them "escort vessels" instead). So, yeah, the joke in the above comic actually works better in English.

The Japanese pretty much invented the destroyer and pioneered its use in combat. Kotaka can be considered the first destroyer, destroyer squadrons were instrumental to Japan's victory over Russia in the Russo-Japanese war, and Fubuki was regarded as the first modern destroyer (IIRC, the first DD with reloadable torpedoes) whose design (or rather, "design philosophy") was eventually copied by navies all over the world.

(Since well, before Fubuki, most navies didn't see the need for putting heavier armaments on destroyers, so most of them only have dinky, unturreted single guns. Of course, the same armaments would lead to Fubuki [and a lot of IJN ships] becoming top-heavy and be in greater danger of capsizing.)

Felled is the past tense of fell, to (knock/cut) down - such as a tree, or an enemy.

    You beat me.
Just adding a little. Felled is the past tense of "to fall," with an emphasis to the causation. The destroyers caused Raoh to fall. Thus it's felled.

    Comparison
    Raoh fell.
    The destroyers felled Raoh.

Edit: The original sentence was in past tense.

6th DesDiv is indeed fearsome. They can make Raoh cry tears of sorrow. Or fold like wet tissue paper.

    Nanodesu is fearsome.
