More like a hot rod, this class wasn't even 20 meters long and carried just two torpedoes and few guns. Even a PT boat considerably out-massed these boats at around 6 meters longer and about twice the displacement. (Despite that the last models with 3x 1,850 HP engines could approach 50 knots with a standard load, but crews tended to utilize this increase in power to allow maintaining previous speeds with a greater payload). These things were not ships in any sense of the word.

This boat was based on the MAS 451, but it wasn't the actual MAS 451. MAS 451 was lost off Malta in the night between 18 and 19 May 1942. In a little known repetition of Nazario Sauro one of the survivors of that operation, Italo-Maltese Carmelo Borg Pisani was sentenced to death and killed by the British as a traitor, despite having renounced his British citizenship in 1940.
    EDIT:
Further infos about MAS 451 (in Italian) here:

    How 'bout that?!
Most likely, the Japanese Navy's truly fastest ship was ITALIAN.
It was a ship purchased from Italy for research purposes: the MAS 451. In Japan, the MAS's speed was recorded at 48.5 knots (Approx 89.8 km/hr). It set the record for Japan's fastest* for that time period.
*The suicide motorboat, Shin'yo model 6's rocket propulsion was recorded to achieve 50 knots (Approx 92.6km/hr), but was not put into use. Although the MAS's end is unclear, it was remodeled as Hayabusa No.1 after its research was complete. After remodeling, it was sent into combat.
Shipwise, a certain torpedo boat was recorded as Japan's fastest.
    Fast!! I can't catch up!
The Japanese Navy's fastest destroyer was Shimakaze. But...
    Italy is the best.
    I am... I am slower!?
