Our would've been better if Kanon has been accompanied by Chouno-san.

Or Kay... after all, it was Kay that punished Alisa for using the radio interceptor last time.

In which case Oraai was presumably disqualified and lost the match for utilizing cellphones for communications purposes, because while radio intercept systems absolutely existed in the period (and EVERYONE at the time attempted to jam, clog, and ease drop on them) fucking cellphones certainly didn't. Really cellphone should be banned entirely given that the modern ones could easily emulate many functions of a modern digital battle management system they can display detailed aerial imaging of the surrounding area, act as a realtime moving map, give precise GPS fixes, measure distances on maps very accurately, track other phones in real time, record and transmit both video and imagery in near real time, and provide encrypted voice and text communications.

Just another case of ridiculous favoritism and characters shields in that botched series.

I'm just surprised they even got a signal out there.

Anyways, writers aren't infallible, and most series have some plot holes in them. It's very hard to think of every single contingency for a sport that doesn't even exist in the real world. Besides, it offered a convenient way for the characters to overcome adversity, and I haven't heard any other people complain about it. As long as it's entertaining, I tend not to care about how the story gets executed.

Actually it was a loophole abuse. The rule book didn't say anything about banning either radio interceptor or cell phones.

In the words of the history club 'That's it!'

There does seem to be an allowance for some modern items like plastic bottles of water, tissue boxes and battery powered fans probably because the rule makers thought they were harmless. Cellphones are probably included and if they are then quite likely so is the use of them making Miho's tactic legal, just that nobody ever thought of it before seeing as her how her unorthodox tactics take everyone by surprise. Given that they just read the rule-book and Miho's own mastery of Panzerkraft I'd say this is implied. This kind of phenomenon is not uncommon in real-life sport either and usually after time rules will be changed to address it but which do not invalidate past victories. I think some rules in Olympic judo were changed a couple of years back to address advantages that freestyles had over traditional styles. As far as can be told spying is also a legal tactic in Panzerkraft, Alisa's spying for instance is never 'formally' punished any more than Yukari's. All of this however is primarily irrelevant to the fact that much of what happened happened because Kay made it so; fighting with even numbers and ceasing any further radio interception etc. For all intents and purposes this may as well be counted as a surrender by respect. The fight with Pravda for instance revealed that forcing a surrender is also a legal means of winning. Panzerkraft rules do seem very loose mind you, I don't think an official team sport IRL that accepts such unbalanced numbers of competitors per game.

For the cellphones to work at all there must clearly be towers on the ship, presumably running to some for of sat-link. A single tower placed on say the bridge tower would effortlessly cover a few kilometers and the entire vessel. Even in the real world cellphones often function anywhere with a road nearby.

This is indeed likely because everyone in that series who wasn't Miho seems to be suffering from some form of brain damage manifesting as mild retardation. This does not make it any less dumb that dozens of TEENAGE GIRLS apparently never thought to exploit their cellphones for crystal clear long distance voice and text communication unimpeded by line of sight issues relating to tank mounted radios over the course of YEARS of competition where smartphones have been common.

Really it just adds to my point that Miho and Oorai were never particularly brilliant, their opponents were just unbelievably stupid. Girl und Panzer was a cool concept ruined by disbelief shatteringly stupid execution that forced every victory to be a complete ass pull.

Well, I like the 49ers because they're pure of heart. Seattle because they got something to prove, and the Raiders because they always cheat.

(So said because there were more rules changed because of the 60's-era Raiders than any other team when they repeatedly kept finding all those things the rules DIDN'T forbid...)

Anyway, Tk is right about this. It stretches credulity that such an unbelievably common, and frequently relied-upon tool as a cellphone had never been used before. Even if cellphones weren't obviously far superior tools than WW2-era comms equipment, (the T-34s didn't even have radios in most of their tanks!) the simple fact that someone could just be calling someone in the bleachers who can look up on the display board and know where the enemy tanks in ambush are would be such a blatantly obvious way to cheat that all the "surprising" plans that Miho comes up with basically require that nobody has ever played Panzerkraft before, and they're all rank newbies to this whole concept.

This idea that they all somehow got amnesia and everyone forgot all the rules to panzercraft until just a year or two before Oorai enters the matches, and nobody knows what they're doing, and they're adlibbing it all as they go is pretty much the only way to make sense of it all, and it generally helps make sense of it, as well. They didn't use real tactics, because explaining real military tactics would require a boring history lesson the fans of cute girls with guns wouldn't sit through, and probably wouldn't be thorough enough for anyone who knew what they were talking about, anyway. So they have to have a game where the players know as little as their least knowledgeable audience member.

It's not that the writers are stupid, it's that the format of anime demands that they all get hit with an amnesia beam. You even see some self-referential jokes on this exact problem in some of the more fourth-wall-breaking animes. ("Don't use real physics! The people who know about it will always complain about some technical detail you got wrong, and the people who don't know won't be able to follow the plot!")

I chalk it up to all the girls doing Senshado operating on the Honor System - since no one was supposed to be using their cellphones during the match, it's an unspoken rule that you don't use it as well, or every gentlemanly(?) rules get thrown out the window in a no-holds-barred beatdown. You also have to remember that Alisa was the only person exploiting the fact the rules didn't restrict anyone from using the radio interceptor balloon, with Kay not being in on it. Cue "Oh crap" from Alisa once Kay finds out what that "Lady's Intuition" actually was.

Since Ooarai realized Alisa has broken that unspoken rule, they countered that by bringing out their own exploit. Notice that Ooarai didn't start using cellphone texting until they could confirm that Saunders was tapping their lines.

Sure, they're playing for keeps, but it's a different ball game if you don't honor the spirit of the sports.

Actually it's not, and it does say. The translated BD booklets, and other suplementary materials detailing what you can and can not do in senshado (http://ww4.sinaimg.cn/large/86d2731fjw1e4ixesy081j218g0s048g.jpg? - the one where they mention it's forbidden to use recon PLANES, so Arisa used recon BALLOONS) actually state that the tanks are all required to replace the vintage comm gear and install modern equipment -bear in mind, some tanks didn't even HAVE radios. What they are specifically forbidden is to get help from external sources (the suplementary material ilustrated it with a scene of Shiho phoning Maho about ambushes). Notice, too, how Arisa had the balloon tethered to the tank so it "technically" wasn't external help =P

Short version: Arisa used a lophole to do something the rules meant to forbid (radio interception). Oarai uses in a different way something that the rules explicitly allow them to use (modern comm gear).

I think the "gathering data during a match via data interception" counts as external help, whereas texting orders to bypass said radio tapping doesn't count.

Basically, if Alisa hadn't been using equipment to overhear what the Oarai plans were, and had simply been listening on person before the match our had been eavesdropping on them while on a break, that would have been legal. But because she's using extra equipment to intercept radio signals, and is going against the spirit of the rules (which explicitly forbid radio intercept via planes), then that counted against her.

Plus, once Alisa broke the rules, all bets were off. The judges may have seen fit to allow it that one time, due to the unfair advantage in equipment.

Please don't use such language. It promotes discrimination against and abuse of real-life people with actual learning disabilities and mental health problems. Such people need patience and support, and dismissing their pain and difficulty the way you did is incredibly harmful to them.
