Didn't you know? Ninja clothes aren't actually realistic. So if someone looks like a ninja, obviously they aren't really one!

Especially if they look like an orange traffic safety cone.

Actually, if the current style of the generation was like that, then yea, it would be. The whole point of ninjas was to blend in, so they'd wear whatever is currently in style and found "Normal". Some of the other characters like Sakura or Ino's clothes looked like normal tomboy clothes, which would be how a real ninja would actually dress like. A normal civilian.

That would make sense if they don't run around wearing an identification badge on their foreheads all the time.

I like the fact the Sendai tells off the admiral about using her to troll someone, then continued with the troll herself.

Well the Ninja's in that world were more like country soldiers/armies for their lord so that's an entirely different issues.

We saw relatively little actual "Assassinations" in Naruto in the first place. They were more like a navy or army if anything. Cops if you were just a normal fodder ninja.

The closest we had to "real" ninjas in Naruto were the Anbu. Which as you say, did not wear the headbands. Although all Anbu had a unique uniform anyway so each village already knew what village another Anbu ninja was from anyway.

In fact, it's stated quite early on(before the time skip when they were kids) that All liscensed ninjas are supposed to always have proper identification to show what village they are from. So yea, only Ninja in name, but they were more like Army troops.

And it does annoy whenever people keep brining up only Naruto specifically. To be fair to him, he literally got his clothes(both pre and post timeskip) in a normal clothing store. That means that his clothes were actually seen as a normal style of clothing that other people would wear. Other ninjas were just as loud(if not louder) than Naruto just as other ninjas were wearing less obtrusive colors like Kakashi or even most of the Sand Ninjas.

So, yeah, none of them were actual ninjas. Exactly my point earlier. "Blending in" isn't even a concern.

('cept for the ANBU corps, for whom the Inverse Ninja Law is in full effect.)

(Same goes with ninja mooks in most fiction anyway. Faceless goons can be killed off more easily.)

(Also child soldiers and institutionalized child abuse. Sure, child soldiers are common characters in fiction, but you can't get any more institutionalized than "hidden soldier villages", really.)

Not that the 'traditional' ninja garb is anyway practical in the first place. Those were derived from the costumes for Kabuki stagehands, who were meant to blend in with the set and are hence ignored by convention by the audience (which is why ninja characters in the stage plays are clad in the same garb.)

Historically, most ninjas were dressed as civilian artisans (giving them an excuse to be at a place, unlike normal civilians). Most were also actual artisans, and ninja 'weapons' were more or least re-purposed tools. The stereotypical ninja dayjobs are the gardener (hence the oniwaban) and the carpenter. Heck, IIRC, the The (non-needle type) shurinken is probably a modified nail-removing tool.

Of course, that would be boring in media, which is why most ninjas are flashy.

Naruto (the series) just takes flashy to a whole new level by discarding all pretense at stealth.

People bring up Naruto (whether the character or the series) because Kishimoto has awful fashion sense. The main character is just a more prominent and readily-bashable example, really.

As for the clothing store, well, as normal as a clothing store you can find in a ninja village, I guess. We don't get to see actual civilians that much outside of the OVAs (which are, like, what, even horribad), and the ones we do see are usually dressed in muted colors like the stereotypical peasant garb worn by the bridge artisan (speaking of which, said bridge artisan would fit in very well as a ninja in the historical Bakumatsu period). There is also a fair amount of anachronism thrown in, with t-shirts being common as well, but most of those colors were also muted.

This is what civilians look like.

(...hey, these guys actually look like they could be ninjas.)

In any case, "safety orange" is not a good color to wear, regardless of how well (or unwell) it blends in with the local populace, when your job description involves sneaking around in forests.

All things considered wouldn't that make Naka the best ninja since no one would ever believe someone so much in the spotlight could be a ninja

Fubuki (I)-classes make the best ninjas.

    Since they're so forgettable.

(Okay, maybe not Fubuki herself not that she's become a Yoshika expy.)

    Hail Shibafu!
