This makes Rory look weak. In the manga she was slicing people in half during this battle.

Are you fucking kidding me? Rory looks awesome animated! The way she's throwing around those big ass dudes and laughing like a maniac has 10 times the impact of a few static black and white images. Those needlessly stylish flourishes, the unnecessary weapon spins, they all show off just how much fun Rory is having playing around with these weaklings. I have no doubt her anime incarnation could easily slice people in half if she cared to, but what does it matter if the enemy gets REKT all the same? Unless you have some gore fetish?

Well not everyone likes gore and blood in an animated show you know?

Regardless though he has a point though I'd say weakER and not weak in this case.
Everything getting weakened/shinier is hardly surprising but I think it'll be more obvious for a certain location probably around Episode 9-10 or wherever they put it, Basically I'm expecting more steam and less plot related to what Rory is which is disappointing.

Poor little indestructible Demigoddess of death, at least you have cat ears now >_>

    Here's how I see it:

-Manga: Far more violent and sexualized, which could be appealing or not. Art style is more suited to show off military aspects and harsh realities. There's actually 3 spin-off mangas nobody cares about, so that is extras that the anime won't have.

-Anime: More streamlined and colorful, which could be appealing or not. Art style is more suited to show off female characters and showcasing the SDF as heroes.

-Light novel: Probably the best version, but I prefer pictures to words.

I actually think that the anime and manga compliment each other pretty well, and while I still prefer the manga, the anime definitely holds its own. Hopefully a blu-ray english sub is released, because that would be an insta buy for me.

I would not say that Rory is weaker, more like removing all that gore takes all visual impact from her fighting.
I dislike this Kuribayashi more ..... she looks like energetic school girl -type from some school life comedy or something.....
And yeah, that over design axe instead of functional beauty of Rory's original weapon

You're right on all accounts, but keep in mind some things. While the gore from the manga is super hype, I did notice something was missing whenever Rory hit the ground. In the anime, dust always pops up, which is used to censor the blood and guts as well as cut down on the animation, but considering her fighting style, it makes sense as she is all over the place. Though the manga does show it sometimes, so it still win out there. With Kuribayashi, its due to this anime also kinda being a shill for the SDF and not being personally animated by the author, but funnily enough, she is actually far more sexualized in the manga, which is not appealing to some people. As for her axe, I actually liked the axe from the anime more, because it looks like something a gothic lolita priestess who worships a god of death would have; more of a religious symbol turned weapon than actual weapon.

Shino's curves may be emphasized more in the manga, but her general face/etc suggests someone who will not take much shit. As opposed to the anime's Schoolgirl like Sirly remarked.

But it's all a case of Market thinking at work.

Well, yeah. At this point, you're simply talking about the limitations of the medium.

The budget would dwarf anything the anime industry would have ever have seen if they tried to be anywhere near faithful to the manga or (god help you) the light novel.

I wasn't talking about her character model, but rather the times they referenced her breast size and emphasized them. For example, the anime glossed over the description the bar waitress gave to the bar patrons when describing the men in green.

One thing unrelated to budget is the changed designs for the characters, which they could've done, albeit at a simpler style. Many people hate the new redesigns, but I actually quite like them, especially Itami's with his beard stubble.

she still uses a disturbingly dis proportioned ax in the manga, this looks more like a Halberd then what the manga uses.

Why would anyone bother with a throw away line like a "tiny girl with big breasts" it's not useful for the narrative at all.

And the only one who's extensively redesigned was Rory since her manga outfit is outlandish to animate with the budget the anime has, a simpler, yet still gothloli design isn't the end of the world.

Actually when I saw the lack of blood I interpreted it as her PLAYING with them. So OP I will take my TIME killing you.

I think it takes much more skill to do all that flourishing, spinning and throwing people around with that giant axe of hers (rather than killing them outright).

Character designs are almost always proportionate to the budget. A really complex goth loli dress character design instantly becomes a multi-million dollar project if you want said character to be part of the main cast across a 13-episode anime season, complete with over the top, badass combat scenes.

True that, but I must say, after looking at the designs side by side, if they just gave her a short skirt, they could definitely have been able to keep it, albeit a little sharper, as they are mostly similar in terms of complexity. Also, this is not the only character to look really different, as Kuri and friends don't really bare a resemblance to their manga counterparts. On top of this, Pina and friends look really different as well, especially sir grey.

My point is I don't think the budget had as much of a part in the redesigns as appealing to a wider audience.

Thats possible, but then we're simply speculating on the financial cost of animating one design versus another. We can endlessly debate whether the anime version is "cheap enough" or "too cheap".

I think we can all agree that the web/light novel/manga version was "too expensive".

While I know the Japanese used a reduced-load variant of 7.62x51mm, it's still .30 cal though (and on full-auto).

My god, this scene had me utterly entranced the first time I saw it. Just the sheer grace and beauty of seeing Rory moving like that.

Was she fighting or DANCING throughout that whole situation? Or both?

They did depict the Howa Type-64 fairly realistically, right down to the bipod breaking off. In reality, one of the reasons the Type-64 was retired was its reportedly widespread "fragile" construction that caused parts of it to break off during field use (a false claim, but pervasive).

Wasn't that Kuribayashi's bayonet breaking rather than the bipod?

    EDIT: Nevermind, she broke both.
