They seem to represent Northern (left girl's constellations: Cygnus, Big Dipper, Cassiopeia and equatorial Orion) and Southern (right girl's constellations: Centaurus, Crux and Pavo) hemispheres.
Also, if you read the commentary it says that they ate the stars to "create" constellations, whatever that means...
