Apparently working as a picket ship during the Leyte campaign, USS Mahan got bullied 9 bombers and 4 escort fighters.

Mahan, a tiny DD, was swarmed by kamikaze planes, shot down 4 but got hit by 3.

She was not salvageable so the other picket ships shot and torpedoed her instead.
Surprisingly, she took less than 20 casualties though.

Picket duty was not very nice. It was basically the US Navy saying, "Hey, DDs, go and put yourself in the kamikaze's line of fire so they hit you instead of our capital ships."
